Free Shawn Peace: A Family’s Plea for Mercy, Redemption, and Justice

Free Shawn Peace: A Family’s Plea for Mercy, Redemption, and Justice
The Issue
Shawn Peace was sentenced to 110 years in prison for crimes he committed at 22. Today, after 15 years behind bars, Shawn is a changed man, a dedicated student, mentor, and advocate for rehabilitation. His transformation shows the power of redemption, and he deserves a chance to continue this work outside the prison walls.
We, his family and community members at large — are asking Governor Kathy Hochul to grant Shawn Executive Clemency and give him a second chance at life.
Shawn’s Story
At age 22, Shawn committed six armed robberies, during which two people were injured. These actions caused real harm and heartbreak, including to his own family. Charisse, Shawn’s sister, turned him in, a decision made out of love and fear for his life, hoping that accountability might save him.
Since then, Shawn has taken full responsibility for his past. He has transformed his life through education, rehabilitation, and service:
- Education: Shawn earned his High School Equivalency Diploma and has made remarkable progress toward higher education. He has nearly completed his Associate’s Degree at Columbia-Greene Community College, with just one class remaining — a course that is not currently being offered. Demonstrating extraordinary initiative, Shawn has been approved to begin taking courses toward his Bachelor’s degree while awaiting the final class. His dedication has been recognized twice on the President’s List for academic excellence. This commitment to learning reflects his drive to grow, to lead, and to positively impact those around him.
- Rehabilitation Programs: Active participant and facilitator in Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA), The Alternative to Violence Project (AVP), The Project for a Calculated Transition, and Exodus Transitional Community and Puppies Behind Bars. These programs work like group therapy; people address childhood trauma and work on introspection and reflection. Participating in these programs has given Shawn the opportunity to identify with his crimes, the circumstances that led to them and the harm he’s caused.
- Mentorship & Advocacy: Co-facilitates workshops teaching conflict resolution; advocates for prison reform and less punitive sentencing laws; featured on The Wrong Agenda Podcast speaking about rehabilitation and improving prison conditions; works as an Inmate Program Associate, serving as a teaching assistant for folks earning their GED.
- Community Engagement: Active member of the Center for Community Alternatives, promoting justice reform and pathways for healing.
Shawn’s life is a testament to the power of growth and accountability. He leads by example, helping others inside prison, and is eager to continue this work as a free man.
Why We Are Petitioning for Clemency
Governor Hochul, we ask you to see what we see: a man who has fully embraced the challenges of rehabilitation, who continues to repair harm, and who dedicates himself to serving others. If the goal of New York’s correctional system is rehabilitation, then Shawn has fulfilled it.
We are asking for mercy, justice, and the chance for redemption. Shawn Peace deserves the opportunity to continue his transformation, contribute to his community, and live a life of peace.
