FREE self-defence classes for women

The Issue

Walking home at night should not feel like a dangerous journey, yet for many women, it is an act of calculated risk. Every dark street, every echoing footstep, every car that slows down sparks a wave of fear that no one should have to feel simply for existing in public. Like countless others, I have faced harassment in forms that still haunt me — being chased down by men, followed for blocks, grabbed without consent, and even subjected to terrifying attempts to force me into cars. These experiences are not rare or isolated. They are symptoms of a society that has failed to make women’s safety a priority.

The constant anxiety of wondering if you will make it home safely is not a burden any woman should have to bear. It changes how we move through the world — where we go, what we wear, how we walk, even when we choose to leave the house. It teaches us to shrink, to adapt, to exist cautiously in spaces that should belong to all of us.

In 2021 alone, it was reported that 81% of women in the UK had experienced some form of sexual harassment in a public space. Eighty-one percent. That is not just a statistic — it is a mirror reflecting how unsafe our streets have become. The places where we should feel most free — sidewalks, buses, parks, and train stations — have become zones of fear. The streets should be spaces of freedom, not fear. Safety for women outside their homes should be a given, not a luxury.

And yet, despite billions of pounds in taxes paid every year, the government continues to fall short in providing even the most basic guarantee: the right to walk home without fear. Policing alone cannot solve this problem. We need proactive measures that equip women with the skills, confidence, and resilience to protect themselves and to reclaim the public spaces that belong to all of us.

That is why it’s time for action. Providing free self-defence classes for all women is a meaningful and immediate step toward ensuring that every woman can walk with confidence and security. This is not just about learning to fight back — it’s about empowerment. It’s about giving women the tools to feel in control of their bodies, their safety, and their freedom. No woman should have to pay for her own defense in a society where safety should be a right, not a privilege.

By reallocating even a fraction of public funds — from existing community programs, education budgets, or safety initiatives — the government could make these classes accessible across the UK. Schools, universities, and local councils could partner with certified instructors to ensure every woman and girl has the opportunity to learn how to protect herself. This is an investment not just in safety, but in confidence, equality, and empowerment.

Imagine a generation of women who walk home without fear. A society where a woman’s safety is not debated or disregarded, but actively protected. Where women no longer share locations or clutch keys between their fingers “just in case.” Where the streets finally belong to everyone.

We are calling on the government to make this a priority — to acknowledge the daily fear that women live with and to take real, tangible steps to address it. Safety should never depend on luck, privilege, or preparation. It should be universal, guaranteed, and non-negotiable.

Let’s build a future where women can leave their homes without fear or hesitation. Let us take this vital step toward genuine freedom, equality, and safety.
