Free sanitary products in Ireland - Period Poverty

The Issue

This is Our Conversation about Menstruation.

As part of YSI (Young Social Innovators), our Transition Year class, Rang Eógan, at Eureka Secondary School want to help solve Period Poverty in Ireland. We need your help to achieve access to free sanitary products in public places all over Ireland.

  • Irish women spend on average, €132 per year on sanitary products.
  • A survey of more than 1,100 young women aged between 12-19 years shows that nearly 50% of Irish teenage girls find it difficult to afford sanitary towels and tampons, according to Plan International.
  • 61% of Irish girls have missed school because of their period and more than 80% said they did not feel comfortable talking about their periods with their father or a teacher.
  • Homeless women and women who cannot afford sanitary products should be able to go to public places for the products we require. No woman should ever experience having to utilize things like newspaper, old rags, cotton wool, etc. as a replacement for sanitary products.
