Free Nuvia: Reunite a Detained Mother with her Hospitalized Child
The Issue
Nuvia Yessenia Martinez Ventura, a 30-year-old mother of five, is being detained by ICE after presenting for a routine check-in at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City. Despite full compliance with ICE’s requirements and a spotless record, she was taken into custody on June 11, 2025—and since then, her family has been in crisis.
Nuvia’s 11-year-old son, Salvador, lives with insulin-dependent Type 1 diabetes—a life-threatening condition requiring precise, round-the-clock care. Nuvia is the only caregiver trained to administer his insulin and monitor his condition. Just three days after her detention, Salvador was hospitalized with dangerously high blood sugar levels. He remains hospitalized, and doctors have not been able to stabilize him. He is in emotional distress, confused, and calling for his mother.
Meanwhile, Nuvia has reported being held in freezing temperatures, sleeping on a cold floor, and surviving on one cookie and one glass of water per day. She has received no medication for her chronic health conditions, which include Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
Her children—aged 3 to 11, several with autism and learning disabilities—are suffering deeply from this traumatic separation.
This is a humanitarian emergency. Nuvia is not a flight risk. She has no criminal history. She appeared in good faith at her ICE check-in and has always complied with her obligations. The government’s decision to detain her has endangered her son’s life and caused irreparable trauma to her entire family.
We call on ICE to release Nuvia Yessenia Martinez Ventura immediately, so she can return to her children, provide life-saving care to her hospitalized son, and prepare her legal case with access to counsel.
Let compassion prevail. Reunite Nuvia with her children before it’s too late.
