Free my father and brother from prison in the UAE

Amal at Free the Eldarats started this petition to Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the United States of America His Excellency, Yousef Al Otaiba

In August 2014, UAE State Security detained my father, Kamal Eldarat, and my brother, Momed Eldarat in a round-up of successful businessmen who had committed no crimes but for being men of Libyan descent living in the UAE at a time of extreme political unrest. My brother and father are American citizens and after living in Davis, California for decades, moved with our entire family to the UAE to pursue careers in the country’s fast-growing economy. At the time of their arrest, my two law-abiding family members had been working peacefully in the UAE for many years – my father, Kamal, in the retail and real estate industries, and my brother, Momed, as the owner of a chain of Subway restaurants. It’s been over 550 days since their detention — please join me in calling for the UAE to release my brother and father from prison immediately.

My father and brother haven’t broken any laws, but the UAE is continuing to move forward with a trial against them based on fictional, politically motivated charges. Kamal and Momed have been unlawfully imprisoned, and for three months after their arrest, they were held without access to any form of external communication. Our family eventually learned that, during this incommunicado time, they were regularly subjected to physical and psychological torture by their captors. They were forced under duress to sign “confessions” that they were not allowed to read, and were refused any contact with our family or legal counsel. If convicted of these charges, Kamal and Momed could face the death penalty in a trial that has no right to appeal.

It’s hard to explain how difficult my father and brother’s detention has been for my family. My family and I miss them every day, and the injustice that they are facing this horror despite their innocence is heart-wrenching.

The UAE’s detainment and treatment of my family members — two U.S. citizens — violates both the UAE constitution and international law. UN human rights experts, Human Rights Watch, and Human Rights First have condemned their torture and detainment. The idea that other countries, particularly our allies, can get away with imprisoning and torturing Americans is completely unacceptable.

In the past year and a half, activists from around the world have joined me to call on the UAE to #FreeTheEldarats, but I need your help too. Please sign this petition to call on Yousef Al Otaiba, the UAE Ambassador to the U.S., to honor his country’s relationship with the U.S. and facilitate an immediate and unconditional release of my father and brother.
