The Issue

Moti has been in captivity in Indore Zoo for over 31 years, out of which he was chained for 13 years! He has spent more than half his life in captivity, enduring severe psychological and physical distress. The isolation and confinement he has experienced, particularly after the loss of his companion Champa, have further worsened his condition. Moti has been experiencing severe psychological impacts, which is evident by regular head-swaying and self-destructive behaviour, like banging his head against the walls. His actions convey that he is going through what is known as zoochosis, seen in animals held captive in zoos.

As highly social beings, elephants are not meant to be kept in enclosures alone, according to the guidelines. It is imperative that we recognise their inherent rights and take immediate action. Moti deserves the opportunity to live the remainder of his life in a sanctuary where he can find peace, happiness, companionship, and the right to a life free from exploitation.

FIAPO (Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations), Indore Animal Liberation, and the Centre for Research on Animal Rights have been working towards Moti’s immediate release and call upon your support and assistance in securing Moti's freedom and well-being. We hereby seek the following actions to be undertaken to ensure Moti's immediate release and well-being:

Free Moti from his current enclosure and facilitate his transfer to a reputable sanctuary where he can experience freedom, ample space, and socialisation with other elephants. The Elephant Centre, run by the Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust in Jamnagar, Gujarat, is one such facility that is well-equipped with provisions that can provide the necessary care and environment close to his natural habitat.

Provide Moti with the essential medical care, rehabilitation, and emotional support needed to heal from the physical and psychological traumas he has endured during his years of captivity. Moti's well-being should be prioritised to ensure a smooth transition into a life of freedom and happiness.

We urge you to support the cause by signing this petition and sharing it widely to amplify our call for justice and freedom for Moti. Let us make a difference and ensure that no sentient being endures such oppression and neglect.
