Free Morgan the orca from LoroParque

Free Morgan the orca from LoroParque
The Issue
Morgan, an orca, has been held in captivity at Loro Parque in Tenerife, Canary Islands, for years. She was originally found in the wild in the Netherlands in 2010 and was taken in by Dolphinarium Harderwijk.
Many say due to the park Harderwijk and NGOs troubling things in court, it led to the situation of the experts being ignored and Morgan was not given what she deserved.
It became an extremely cruel situation to do with profit instead of the original intention of release.
Morgan was rescued in poor health and brought to Loro Parque for rehabilitation with the intention of eventually releasing her back into the wild.
Despite her recovery, Morgan remains confined at this park, performing in shows, contrary to the initial goal of her release and instead is forced to contribute to the ongoing cycle of marine mammal entertainment.
She has been made to breed two times, she has a baby currently called Teno. Her other calf died at only three. She mated with Keto, who passed away November 22nd, 2024 at age 29.
Morgan is continuously used for profit when she could’ve been put on contraceptives.
She was meant to be rescued and released. But she was stolen. We were all given false hope she’d be given better. But Morgan was failed.
LoroParque continue to lie and violate Morgan’s CITES certificate. They use her in shows and breed her even though they weren’t meant to, but the Spanish authorities do nothing about it.
Morgan has declined rapidly in captivity, shown with her teeth from gnawing on the gates and concrete and her body is full of deep rake marks due to the abuse from the other orcas that she cannot run away from.
This is such a bad situation that there was a paper brought in called ‘Morgan’s Law’ to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.
Morgan has been proven to belong to a Norwegian pod, her extended family are likely the P pod.
Due to her hearing deficit and her current baby Teno, she could be taken to a sea pen or a rehab centre where she could live out the rest of her life without having to be bred again or used in shows like the original intention was meant to be.
The Dolfinarium Harderwijk and Dutch Government officials were responsible for ensuring Morgan’s rights as a wild-born res publicae dependent of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. As such, they failed to present all of the relevant material facts necessary to guide the Court and ensure transparency of the acts and actions of all the parties involved. This resulted in a distorted presentation of the issues to the Court.
However, the Court also failed to acknowledge crucial evidence, deliberately dismissed new findings by orca experts, overlooked aspects of the law and stripped Morgan of her legal rights. The end verdict, a travesty of justice, resulted in Morgan being shipped to another theme park, LoroParque.
Morgan has a very good chance, she’s only 18 or 19 currently and is healthy enough for transfer. She can be given everything she needs at a sea pen.
We can’t keep waiting while she suffers exploitation.
Orcas are known for their highly social behavior and extraordinary intelligence. In the wild, they live in complex social structures, travel vast distances, and dive deep. Captivity, on the other hand, confines them to small enclosures, depriving them of their natural behaviors and causing physical and psychological harm. Evidence from marine experts and wildlife organizations suggests that captivity can lead to shortened lifespans and stress-related illnesses.
Moreover, credible research indicates that successful rehabilitation and release of captive orcas is possible, provided they are in suitable habitats with monitoring and support. Loro Parque has the opportunity to lead the way in ethical animal treatment by planning and executing Morgan's transfer to a sea pen or rehab centre.
We call upon Loro Parque to take immediate steps to coordinate with marine biologists and animal welfare organisations to create a comprehensive plan that ensures Morgan’s health and safety during her transfer and adjusting to new surroundings. This initiative would not only set a positive precedent but also reflect the growing global sentiment for more humane treatment of intelligent marine mammals.
Join us in urging Loro Parque to honor their original commitment by giving Morgan a better life , ensuring her rightful place in the ocean and contributing to the conservation of her species. Please sign this petition to help give Morgan the chance to live a life of dignity in a much more natural environment.
If LoroParque and the authorities truly cared, they’d begin this process and give Morgan her freedom back.
