The Issue

I write to express deep concern over the imprisonment of Lucy Connolly, who has been sentenced to 31 months for a tweet. While speech can indeed be harmful at times, criminalizing expression to this extent sets a truly alarming precedent.

Lucy deleted her tweet within hours, showing a willingness to address and rectify her actions. Despite this, she is now serving a 31-month sentence, purely on the basis of words—while many others convicted of violent offenses serve far lesser sentences, paedophiles walking free with just a suspended punishment. It boggles the mind and burdens the heart.

Justice should be fair and proportional, and in Lucy's case, her punishment is anything but. It raises a profound concern about how we value human life, liberty, and the notion of justice in a world where violent crimes occasionally warrant lighter sentences than words spoken online.

Let us reflect on the values of free expression and the principles of fairness and justice, which underpin a democratic society. Speaking out for Lucy Connolly is not just about one woman’s freedom—it's about establishing clear boundaries on punishing speech, and protecting a citizen's right to express themselves without fear of disproportionate retribution. If the justice system was trying to prove a point by her hefty sentence, they made it. Loud and Clear. Now it is time to release her to her family. A suspended sentence or probation for a first offense should have been given instead of a hefty prison sentence. We ask you to reconsider.

Join me in calling for the reevaluation of Lucy Connolly's sentence, advocating for a fair, just, and proportional legal approach when dealing with expressions of speech. Sign this petition to support Lucy and to protect the foundational freedoms we all cherish.
