The Issue

We, the undersigned, respectfully request your attention and support for the release of Joesph Akers, who has been serving a lengthy sentence of 192 months for the charge of Conspiracy to Distribute 1000 kilograms and more of marijuana. We firmly believe that Joesph has demonstrated significant personal growth and transformation during his time behind bars, making him deserving of a second chance. Moreover, it is crucial to acknowledge the systemic racial injustice perpetuated by the War on Drugs, which has disproportionately targeted black individuals.

It is no secret that the War on Drugs has had a devastating impact on communities of color. Statistics have consistently shown that people of color, particularly black individuals, have been disproportionately targeted, arrested, and incarcerated for drug-related offenses, despite similar rates of drug use across racial lines. This racial bias in law enforcement and sentencing policies has perpetuated systemic injustice and reinforced harmful stereotypes.

During his incarceration, Joesph Akers has actively pursued self-improvement and rehabilitation. He has completed various educational programs, including parenting classes, the Inside Out Dad program, financial literacy courses, OSHA classes, business classes, and anger management training.  These efforts demonstrate his commitment to personal development and his desire to reintegrate into society as a productive and law-abiding citizen.

Furthermore, Joesph has been employed as an industrial plumber while in prison, making a mere $25.00 per month. This exploitative situation exemplifies the parallels between mass incarceration and modern-day slavery. It highlights the urgent need to address the systemic injustices within our criminal justice system, particularly in cases involving non-violent drug offenses.

One of the primary reasons we advocate for Joesph's release is the immense burden placed upon his wife, who has been left to care for their six children alone for the past six years. This prolonged separation has taken a toll on their family, and Joesph is eager to be reunited with his loved ones and alleviate his wife's struggles. Their enduring 20-year relationship, including 16 years of marriage, underscores the strength and commitment they share.

While we acknowledge the seriousness of the offense for which Joesph was convicted, we firmly believe that his demonstrated growth, his commitment to rehabilitation, and his strong family ties make him a suitable candidate for early release. We appeal to your sense of justice and compassion to grant Joesph Akers the opportunity to rejoin his family and contribute positively to society.

By signing this petition, we lend our voices in support of Joesph Akers and request a thorough review of his case with consideration for his release. We believe in the power of redemption and second chances, and we trust that Joesph will make valuable contributions to his community upon his return.

Please stand with us in addressing racial injustice within the criminal justice system and help reunite Joesph Akers with his family. Let us work together to give him a chance to rebuild his life, fight against systemic bias, and continue his path of personal growth and positive change.
