Free Hassan Akkad: Protect Freedom of Expression in Syria

We, the undersigned, call on the Syrian authorities to immediately provide full transparency regarding the detention and legal proceedings involving Syrian filmmaker, activist, and public commentator Hassan Akkad.

Hassan Akkad is widely known for sharing Syrian stories with international audiences and for advocating for human dignity, justice, and accountability. Reports that he has been detained under Syria's Cybercrime Law have raised serious concerns among Syrians and supporters of human rights around the world.

Regardless of political opinion, no individual should face detention, prosecution, or intimidation for the peaceful expression of views, criticism of public figures, or participation in public debate.

Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right recognized under international law. A society cannot move toward stability, accountability, and democratic governance if citizens fear punishment for speaking openly and peacefully.

This case is larger than one individual. It concerns the future of civil liberties in Syria and the ability of Syrians to express opinions without fear of retaliation.

We therefore call for:

• Full transparency regarding the legal basis for Hassan Akkad's detention and any charges brought against him.

• Immediate access to legal counsel and all due process protections guaranteed under law.

• Independent monitoring of the case by human rights organizations and relevant international bodies.

• Protection of the rights of all Syrians to engage in peaceful expression, criticism, journalism, and public debate.

• The release of Hassan Akkad unless credible evidence of a recognizable criminal offense is presented and adjudicated through a fair and transparent legal process.

The future of Syria should be built on dignity, accountability, and freedom—not fear.

We urge journalists, human rights organizations, policymakers, and members of the international community to closely follow this case and speak out in defense of fundamental freedoms.

أوقفوا الملاحقة بحق حسان عقاد — احموا حرية التعبير في سوريا

نحن الموقعين أدناه ندعو السلطات السورية إلى ضمان الشفافية الكاملة والإجراءات القانونية العادلة في قضية صانع الأفلام والناشط والمعلّق العام السوري حسان عقاد.

يُعرف حسان عقاد على نطاق واسع بجهوده في نقل قصص السوريين إلى العالم وبمساهماته في النقاش العام حول قضايا العدالة والكرامة والمساءلة. وقد أثارت التقارير المتعلقة بتوقيفه بموجب قانون الجرائم الإلكترونية مخاوف جدية لدى السوريين والمدافعين عن حقوق الإنسان في مختلف أنحاء العالم.

بغض النظر عن المواقف السياسية أو الآراء الشخصية، لا ينبغي أن يتعرض أي شخص للتوقيف أو الملاحقة أو الترهيب بسبب التعبير السلمي عن آرائه أو انتقاد الشخصيات العامة أو المشاركة في النقاش العام.

إن حرية التعبير حق أساسي من حقوق الإنسان تكفله المواثيق والمعاهدات الدولية. ولا يمكن لأي مجتمع أن يتقدم نحو الاستقرار والمساءلة والحكم الرشيد إذا كان أفراده يخشون العقاب بسبب آرائهم أو كلماتهم.

إن هذه القضية لا تتعلق بحسان عقاد وحده، بل تتعلق بمستقبل الحريات العامة في سوريا وبحق السوريين جميعاً في التعبير عن آرائهم والمشاركة في الشأن العام دون خوف من الملاحقة أو الانتقام.

وعليه، فإننا ندعو إلى:

• الكشف الكامل والشفاف عن الأساس القانوني لتوقيف حسان عقاد وأي اتهامات موجهة إليه.

• ضمان حصوله الفوري على التمثيل القانوني وجميع حقوقه المكفولة بموجب القانون.

• تمكين المنظمات الحقوقية والجهات المستقلة من متابعة القضية ومراقبة إجراءاتها.

• حماية حق جميع السوريين في التعبير السلمي عن آرائهم وممارسة النقد والمشاركة في النقاش العام دون خوف أو تهديد.

• الإفراج عن حسان عقاد ما لم يتم تقديم أدلة واضحة وموثوقة على ارتكابه جرماً جنائياً معترفاً به قانوناً، وبما يضمن محاكمة عادلة وشفافة وفق الأصول القانونية.

إن سوريا التي يتطلع إليها أبناؤها هي سوريا تقوم على الكرامة والعدالة وسيادة القانون، لا على الخوف أو تقييد الحريات.

وندعو الصحفيين والمنظمات الحقوقية وصنّاع القرار وأعضاء المجتمع الدولي إلى متابعة هذه القضية عن كثب والدفاع عن المبادئ الأساسية لحرية التعبير والعدالة وسيادة القانون.
