Frik and Peter have been released!
After more than two years of wrongful detention in Equatorial Guinea, the two innocent South African engineers, Frik Potgieter and Peter Huxham, are finally home!
Frik and Peter were returned to their families this week following a pardon from the President of Equatorial Guinea, for which the families are extremely grateful.
In July 2024, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that their imprisonment was arbitrary, unlawful, and in breach of multiple international human rights obligations. The UN, at the time, also called for their immediate release.
It’s taken a lot of time and effort to get here, but they are finally free, which ends a long and painful chapter marked by anguish, uncertainty, and tireless efforts from loved ones, their employer, governments, diplomats… and from all of you.
For the families, today means everything. It is the result of relentless hope and collective humanity.
We are profoundly grateful and relieved.
