Free Corey: An Innocent Man Has Spent 20 Years in Prison Despite His Accuser Recanting.

The Issue

An innocent man has spent 20 years in prison—and the person who accused him now says he didn’t do it.

Yet Corey Wilson is still behind bars.

Far too often in America, innocent Black men are taken from their homes, families, and communities—wrongfully accused and imprisoned for crimes they did not commit.

Corey Wilson is one of those men.

At just 20 years old, Corey was arrested and charged with a crime that had no physical evidence tying him to it. Despite the lack of evidence, he was convicted and sentenced to prison.

Today, 20 years later, Corey remains incarcerated.

What makes this case even more troubling is that the accuser has signed a notarized affidavit recanting her original statements and stating that Corey Wilson is innocent of any crime. This affidavit has been provided to and is currently held by the Maryland State’s Attorney’s Office.

This is the same accusation that helped send Corey to prison in the first place.

Yet even with this sworn statement recanting the original testimony, Corey remains behind bars.

For two decades, Corey has lost irreplaceable time with his family, his community, and the life he should have been allowed to build. He has had to grow into manhood in one of the harshest environments imaginable—prison.

He has missed milestones many of us take for granted: building a career, creating a family, celebrating holidays at home, and simply living life as a free man.

No one should lose 20 years of their life to a wrongful conviction.

This petition is a call for justice.

We are asking the appropriate legal authorities to immediately review Corey Wilson’s case and take the necessary action to correct this injustice. An innocent man should not spend another day in prison when the testimony used to convict him has been formally recanted through a notarized affidavit declaring his innocence.

Corey deserves the chance to rebuild his life, reconnect with his loved ones, and finally experience the freedom that should never have been taken from him.
