Too many individuals are being held in prison with the keys thrown away, never to be looked at again. That needs to change. Under the current laws, individuals who committed non-violent marijuana possession are serving upwards of life in prison. This extreme punishment is not only cruel and unusual but fails to recognize the shifting legal landscape surrounding marijuana. Several states have legalized marijuana for recreational and medical use, yet these individuals remain behind bars. The law needs to reopen these cases and free these people under the reform act because nothing about a life sentence is reform.
