We, the signers of this petition urge the State of Maryland and the governor, Larry Hogan, to pardon Adnan Syed, as he is not guilty of the murder of Hae Min Lee. Innocent people every day are charged with crimes they never committed and forced to live the rest of their lives confined in a jail cell. This is exactly the story of Adnan Syed.

Adnan Syed is a Pakistani-American Muslim who attended Woodlawn High School in the late 1990’s. His life took an unfortunate turn in the wrong direction when his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, went missing on January 13th, 1999.

Hae Min Lee, Adnan’s ex-girlfriend was a Korean-American senior at Woodlawn High School as well. Her sudden disappearance was mysterious; followed by the horrific discovery of her body, which was found dumped in a shallow grave in Leakin Park, on February 9th, 1999. Marks of forced strangulation were visible.

On February 28th, 1999, Adnan Syed was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Adnan has been wrongfully convicted and sentenced to spend his entire life in prison, while the actual murderer could still be roaming free to this day.

When detectives and police went to investigate this case, there was no trace of forensic evidence to show Adnan was guilty. In court, the prosecutor's main evidence against Adnan was an alibi, Jay Wilds. Jay and Adnan used to be acquaintances in high school, but Jay testified against Adnan in court. Jay’s story seemed believable to the jury, filled with details of time and location, and calls that matched cell phone tower pings. What most people didn't realize was that Jay’s story was 100 percent fabricated. He was forced to make up the story, as the prosecutors told Jay that if he did not testify against Adnan in court, they would throw him in jail instead, and he would be given the death row sentence. Every time the police and detectives found new evidence, Jay changed the story. This is obvious by the fact that his court statements were different each time when questioned about it by different people.

Adnan’s religion and ethnicity were referred to more than 300 times during his trial. The prosecutors even stated that because Adnan is Muslim and Pakistani, he was the type of person to kill a girl, then flee the country, so he should be denied bail. However, the likelihood of a crime being committed by a particular person should not be determined by religion and ethnicity.

Due to the aforementioned explanation, we respectfully ask the State of Maryland and Governor Larry Hogan to pardon Adnan Syed, as he was falsely convicted, and is still being accused of murdering Hae Min Lee.
