Fragrance free school district
The Issue
my name is Brandi, my 11 year old daughter is a fifth grader at Connally ISD. She has asthma and an allergy to something in perfumes, body sprays, ect. She has had multiple, what the dr said was an anaphylaxis reaction, to it causing her to not be able to breathe. The school says that they are working on the situation, but it is still present and being sprayed in hallways and bathrooms. Some of the children are purposely spraying it at my daughter. My daughter has been to the er three times in just a few days this last week and this Monday alone because of it and has been to urgent care numerous times this school year. It has gotten to the point of being afraid to send her to school for fear of her life. Im terrified , it’s a very scary situation. You drop your kids off thinking they are safe and they are not, mine isn’t anyway. I get a call from the school nurse on a daily basis just about telling me that someone sprayed something again and she can’t breathe. Her father and I have taken her to drs appointments we have gotten all the appropriate medication that she needs at school. Tuesday 4/11 we got a phone call and she was rushed to the emergency room, Wednesday we kept her home and on Thursday 4/13 it was really bad. I get a call from Connally elementary school saying that my daughter stopped breathing, we just addressed the situation on Tuesday and the principal assured me it would stop and they would start checking bags, she even sent a text asking parents not to allow their children to bring these items to school. I am upset, I feel the school isn’t taking my daughters medical condition seriously. I feel the school nurse neglected my daughter on Thursday 4/13/2023 she was on the phone with me and her father in a panic in front of our daughter instead of calling 911 and giving first aid. My daughters condition became worse. We kept her home on Friday. She went back to school Monday 4/17 and the same things happened again she was taken to hospital by ambulance. I feel the nurse needs some more training. Although Administration, the school principal and the school nurse have apologized for that. I feel an apology isn’t good enough I feel my daughter was neglected in that situation. I feel she is unsafe in her school environment. I requested from the school for her to work from home and they said no. I was threatened that if she didn’t come to school she would get truancy so I asked her dr for a letter to keep her home to do her schoolwork, I received it but only until her appointment on the 27th. I’m terrified. This can’t keep happening. My goal in trying to get this investigated is to bring attention to it at this school and others as well,to maybe save a life. I don’t want to lose my daughter for something to change.
