I work to keep the updates limited and full of factual information regarding our efforts to have "The Glades" return. This update, I'd like to focus on some facts as have been seen as a result of the A&E's programming changes. I want to emphasize that nothing I have seen is necessarily a direct result of them cancelling "The Glades", but does indicate that their programming direction has not resulted in higher viewership, or ratings. Even their star player, "Duck Dynasty" is slipping a bit.
Two shows are considered to have replaced the open air time vacated by "The Glades". First, "Big Smo". While starting out with a so-so cable rating of .8 and 1.8 million viewers, this show's ratings have continued a downward spiral ever since. Last Wednesday's show only received a measly .5 rating and 1.2 million viewers. People are so upset, there is a huge barrage of negative comments on A&E's Facebook page demanding they take this show off the air. To put the ratings in perspective, "The Glades" season four average was a .6 rating with 2.59 million viewers. We all know the season finale ended with a .9 rating and 3.4 million viewers.
Second, "Lone Star Lady" premiered on July 13th not even receiving an honorable mention in the top 100 cable ratings for the entire day! I think we are all confused as to what exactly A&E's intention really is. Did they intend to introduce shows that woudn't be a success?? What data did they have to even think these shows would work?? The only thing I can guess is they both are so much cheaper to produce than "The Glades", A&E just doesn't care how bad they do. However, you truly do get exactly what you pay for.
Even though some might think that only 17,000 plus signatures is small, it is abundantly clear to me the rest of our 3.4 million viewers have made their voices heard. Networks live and die by their ratings and viewers. Whether they even find or sign this petition, viewers are speaking up where it hits A&E the hardest. Don't mistake for a second that the efforts here are in vein. Why do you think USA Network signed Matt Passmore to a new show on their network? Why do you think Kiele Sanchez was signed for a new DirecTV show? Although a network decision may prove to be wrong in the end, none of them make "accidental" decisions. USA and DirecTV are certainly after some of the 3.4 million viewers who watched "The Glades". And the fact that 17,000 have signed this petition indicate their choice was not accidental, and could prove to be successful for them. No one can ever promise we will ever see another episode of "The Glades". But don't give up thinking that the networks are not watching this petition. I know for certain it has garnered the attention of several networks.
A Call to Action: Here is what I'd like each of you do to. When you receive this update, please forward it, along with any personal comments you'd like to add, to A&E at aefeedback@aenetworks.com. They are most certainly watching the ratings, but we can remind them that cancelling quality TV for something viewers clearly don't want will cost them.
