La Mutoid Waste Company approda a Santarcangelo di Romagna nel ‘90, quando il festival Santarcangelo dei Teatri invita questo collettivo di artisti e performer punk a svolgere una serie di esibizioni. I Mutoid venivano da un lungo tour europeo, iniziato da Londra come fuga dalle legislazioni della Thatcher, e creavano spettacoli dotati di veicoli modificati, giochi col fuoco e sculture cinetiche e non, costituite da oggetti destinati alle discariche.

Trovano a Santarcangelo un'accoglienza e uno spazio dismesso dove creare, e colgono l’opportunità di stabilircisi, nasce così Mutonia.

Da allora i Mutoid, compagnia sempre in movimento e cambiamento, hanno fatto di una ex cava di ghiaia la loro casa creandovi abitazioni senza muratura né intonaco: secondo la loro natura nomade di travellers, vivono in autobus e camion dismessi collegati a rimorchi o spazi costruiti ad hoc, modificati ed adattati in modo da fungere da case non, almeno a prima vista, distinguibili dalle le opere d’arte.

Queste abitazioni hanno ospitato tre generazioni di Mutoid che vivono, lavorano e vanno a scuola a Santarcangelo, ma che sono mossi dal principio di non separazione tra vita e produzione artistica, e dal concetto di Mutate & Survive, volto a ridefinire il proprio stile di vita prendendo le distanze dall’era industriale e del consumismo.

Mutonia, però, non è solamente casa: le abitazioni sono circondate da sculture e creazioni costruite da rottami e scarti, oltre che dalla natura che nei decenni ha riconquistato l’area anche grazie agli sforzi dei membri della compagnia, che hanno rivendicato i suoi spazi, arricchendoli con le opere dell’ingegno dei tanti abitanti del luogo e di artisti di passaggio .

Mutonia è da sempre un parco sculture aperto gratuitamente al pubblico, in cui i visitatori si possono immergere nella sperimentazione artistica continua che la contraddistingue, in quanto crocevia di relazioni, fucina creativa in continuo movimento.

I Mutoid hanno goduto sin dall’inizio della più benevola accoglienza e affetto da parte dell’intera comunità santarcangiolese, cementando in 35 anni di pacifica convivenza una simbiosi tra la città e questa comunità.

Perché chiediamo il vostro aiuto?

Oggi, però, a causa della sentenza negativa del Consiglio di Stato che ribalta il giudizio del TAR (ricorsi intentati da un singolo cittadino che dal 1999 la denuncia a più riprese) Mutonia è in pericolo. Questo spazio unico nel suo genere, patrimonio in termini di cultura e dissidenza e manifestazione di un’ideale anticonsumista, nonché casa di numerose famiglie, potrebbe essere spazzato via definitivamente. 

Ci troviamo sotto un’istanza di demolizione a causa dell’abusività di strutture che la sovrintendenza stessa (Sovrintendenza ai Beni mobili di Bologna e Sovrintendenza ai Beni paesaggistici di Ravenna) ha definito un continuum artistico con le opere d’arte, confermando che di questa particolare espressione artistica va fatto tesoro, anziché auspicarne la distruzione; vi chiediamo dunque di aiutarci a tutelare Mutonia e supportare nuovamente questa comunità che sin dalla sua genesi si fa portavoce di una visione del mondo fondata sull’ambientalismo, anticonsumismo e pacifismo, facendo del suo meglio per creare la sua piccola e contenuta utopia, aperta ed accessibile.

ENGLISH– Let us introduce ourselves, what is Mutonia?

The Mutoid Waste Company first arrived in Santarcangelo di Romagna during 1990, when the Santarcangelo Theatre Festival (Santarcangelo dei Teatri) invited the travelling collective of punk artists and performers to present a series of shows.

The Mutoids were on a long European tour, having left the UK to escape austere Thatcherite legislation. Their iconic itinerant performances featured modified vehicles, fire effects and sculptures (both kinetic and non-kinetic) created using objects destined for the scrapheaps of Europe.

However, the Mutoids found a warm welcome in Santarcangelo and, when they were offered the use an abandoned quarry, they took the opportunity to establish a more permanent base there - thus Mutonia was born.

Since that point, the Mutoid group (with its rotating cast of members) have made this former gravel pit their home and have created dwellings without bricks and mortar. In keeping with their nomadic nature, they live in adapted buses, trucks, caravans or purpose-built spaces, these homes are not (at least at first glance) distinguishable from the works of art.

These dwellings have now hosted three generations of Mutoids who live, work and go to school in Santarcangelo; however, they remain driven by the principle of fusing day-to-day life with their artistic production. The group is led by the concept of “Mutate & Survive”, redefining their lifestyle by distancing themselves from consumerism and the industrial age.

Mutonia, however, is not just a home: the dwellings are decorated and surrounded by sculptures and other creations made from scrap and waste materials; this creative reality is not only produced by the Mutoids but also contributed to by many locals and passing artists. Thanks to the efforts of the inhabitants everything in this reclaimed space is now entwined with nature, which, over the decades, has also regenerated the site.

Mutonia has always been a sculpture park open to the public free of charge, where visitors can immerse themselves in the continuous artistic experimentation that characterizes this constantly evolving creative melting pot.

From the beginning, the Mutoids have enjoyed a warm welcome and deep affection from the people of Santarcangelo thus cementing 35 years of peaceful coexistence; a symbiotic relationship between the town and the community.

Why are we asking for help?

Today, however, Mutonia is in danger due to a ruling by the Consiglio di Stato.

The high court has recently overturned a previous judgement by the Regional Administrative Court. Since it was instated in 1999 one individual citizen hasrepeatedly appealed against this original judgement resulting in the dire situation Mutonia faces today.

This unique space, important in terms of modern cultural heritage and which (by its very exsistence) embodies anti-consumerism and anti-establishmentarianism, is a home to many families and could be wiped out for good.

We are now under a demolition order due to the supposed illegal nature of the buildings here in Mutonia, despite two governmental departments (Bologna Superintendency of Movable Heritage and Ravenna Superintendency of Landscape Heritage) having defined these very structures as an extension of the artworks surrounding them, thereby confirming that this method of artistic expression should be treasured, instead of wishing for its destruction.

We are therefore asking you to help us protect Mutonia and to support our community which, since its beginning, has advocated a vision of the world based on environmentalism, anti-consumerism and pacifism; we’re doing our best to create a small and self-contained utopia, open and accessible.
