Save The Shortthorn Trees

Save The Shortthorn Trees
The Issue
This campaign is to try and save the trees which are in dangerof being felled along Shortthorn Road. We have already lost a part of the roadside tree stock to felling and as I understand there is no plan to replace them.
The landowner claims that they are in poor condition because of previous neglect. However the trees have been there a long time and apart from shedding an odd branch have not been a significant problem in the 30 odd years that I have lived here.
There are trees along much of the length of Shortthorn Road and they are a valuable part of the landscape and are part of the character of the area which extends onto the Cromer Road at one end and the Holt road at the other. If this argument was applied to roadside trees in general then we wouldn’t have roads through woodland at all. The city of Norwich would have to lose many ancient and beautiful trees. Surely if we considered roadside trees to be dangerous then all of the Shortthorn Road residents would have to cut theirs down too as they are all of a similar age. Those of us who find the idea of living in a treeless, featureless landscape should make a stand and fight to prevent the completely unnecessary removal of these trees which provide shelter for many species of insect and birds. They are part of a hedgerow of native species which all provide food and shelter for wildlife. They also provide shelter and shade for the farm animals that graze in the field.
