Save The "Earths Lungs" Before Its Too Late
The issue
The Amazon rainforest is home to 1 in 10 species of all species on earth and produce over 20% oxygen, giving its name the "Lungs Of The Planet". The survival of the Amazon Rainforest is crucial for Earth and for Humans. We are losing the Amazon through logging because of the massive timber industry.
Why should you care??
If the Amazon rainforest was lost, it would have a crucial affect on the oxygen levels on Earth, therefore impacting you and your family. Almost every Timber product you have purchased has been produced from wood from the Amazon, which means that each tree that is being cut down to create timber products is destroying natural habitats of the animal species in the Amazon. Over 940,000 people live and rely on the preservation of the Amazon Rainforest to survive.
Threats to the Amazon
The biggest threat to the Amazon is deforestation (logging). Deforestation occurs because of the massive growth in the timber market. There are two types of logging that occur; Clear-felling (cutting down all trees in a specific area) and Selective (cutting down only the trees that suit the needs of the people cutting it down). Even though Selective logging has more advantages than Clear-felling, both still catastrophically affect the Amazonian environment. A study conducted by the Brazilian commission indicated that 12 out of 13 Brazilian companies had illegally logged in the Amazon. More than 80% of the Amazon rainforest has been illegally logged. More than 51,000 square miles are cut down from the Amazon every day
Benefits and Human uses of the Amazon
Over 7000 medicines come from plants and animals in the rainforest, these include remedies for; Asthma, allergic reactions, Malaria and acne. Only 1% of the Amazons plants and animals are tested as medicines, this indicates that 99% of the Amazon is untested as medicine and scientist could possibly make breakthroughs in medication, including cures for harmful diseases.
Possible solutions
Raise awareness campaigns for the preservation of the Amazon Rainforest, donate money to organisations that support the Amazon rainforest, plant GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) trees in testing areas that have already been set up around Brazil. GMO have many side affects if consumed but make trees and plants grow faster and bigger at a rate of 40% faster than the average process. The can also grow food in any season. Place sanctions against the Brazilian government. This means that the we will pressure the Australian government, to pressure the Brazilian government to bring illegal logging to justice and decrease the amount of legal logging in the Amazon.
