Force Hasbro to sell off / make a drastic change with the handling of Power Rangers
The issue
TL;DR: The current state of Power Rangers sucks a lot, and this petition is asking Hasbro to either A) make an immediate change to the treatment of the Power Rangers franchise starting with greenlighting production of a 31st season, or B) sell the IP and relevant assets to a company more willing to properly invest in its future.
This year marks the 8th year that Hasbro has owned the Power Rangers IP since that franchise (along with the rest of Saban Brands) was purchased for over $500 million USD in May 2018.
Originally it seemed like Hasbro had big plans for the franchise, seeing as the next year saw the continued release of the main kids TV series, Hasbro's first take on a tie-in toyline as well as the launch of the Lightning Collection for more mature fans, and the announcement of a reboot project that would be led by Jonathan Entwistle.
However it seems like all of this has since fell apart, likely due to a change in Hasbro CEO (Brian Goldner, who oversaw the Saban Brands buyout, passed away in late 2021 and was shortly succeeded by Chris Cocks). Cosmic Fury, the 30th season, had it's hero suit designs compromised to make simpler-to-produce action figures, the budget cut to produce 10 episodes instead of the planned 20, budget cuts leaving the final episode with a very underwhelming finale, and the tie-in toyline releasing only 3 products (none of which are the aforementioned cheap-to-make action figures). Following that, Hasbro ceased production of the TV show and all toys (including the Lightning Collection even though it is tied to the brand as a whole rather than a current series), auctioned off many of the props and costumes still with the brand, and has effectively brought the franchise into a hiatus. Later on it was revealed from a Reddit AMA from Entwistle that his reboot was cancelled around this time too.
It might be reasonable to assume this all happened because there's not much money in Power Rangers these days. But that doesn't seem to be particularly true. There are several companies that have licensed (or continued existing deals with) Power Rangers in the meantime, such as Playmates Toys (that deal getting announced only 6 months after Cosmic Fury released), Atari (MMPR: Rita's Rewind), East Side Games (Power Rangers: Mighty Force), Super7, Funko, Boom! Studios, Amulet Books, and Epic Games (a Power Rangers collab with Fortnite in mid-2025, and another skin pack in early 2026). There's also legally-distinct properties that are clearly banking on the notoriety of Power Rangers, such as the anime series known in English as Go! Go! Loser Ranger! and The Red Ranger Becomes An Adventurer In Another World that have been made available for streaming, and rival toy company MGA Entertainment having developed Armorsaurs with very clear influence (to the point that both shows are adaptations of footage from Asian shows recontextualised for creating the illusion of a new product, and Armorsaurs also adds colour-coded superhero suits to it's heroes that weren't present in the source material). It's also alleged that the next movie directed by The Daniels and starring Matt Damon is strongly inspired by Power Rangers (but this is just a rumour at the moment).
In fact, Disney seemed like they were a surprise partner for the future of Power Rangers, after previously owning the series between 2001-2010, they have more recently been streaming the two Power Rangers movies made in the 90s in some regions of the world (thanks to being part of the catalogue of titles inherited from 20th Century Fox), taking on the international streaming rights for Go! Go! Loser Ranger! and Armorsaurs, and developing another Power Rangers reboot for Disney+ headed by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz.
That all came crashing down this month when it was reported that Disney declined to greenlight that show, for one simple reality: Disney wouldn't have full control and profit from such a project, and Hasbro would profit disproportionately to their input. This is because in late 2024, Chris Cocks declared that Hasbro wouldn't be financing movies based on their own IP anymore. That isn't to say they won't be happening anymore, but if they do the funding would have to come from somewhere else. For a show like Power Rangers, which is probably one of the most blatant kinds of toy-commercial-disguised-as-entertainment series you can get, a business relationship where an entertainment company essentially pays the toy company to make an advertisement makes no sense, especially when Hasbro has historically had generation-defining success financing TV series and movies based on brands like Transformers and GI Joe.
Especially after approx. 7 years of trying to get a streaming reboot off the ground and now not even having a studio signed on to that kind of project, I believe it's time that Hasbro admitted what I've believed ever since the Playmates deal was announced - that the current strategy isn't going to work in the long run, and that seeing as Hasbro isn't producing a mainline TV show themselves or making any toys, there is little value the brand is contributing to their catalogue, so they should A) make an immediate change to the treatment of the Power Rangers franchise starting with greenlighting production of a 31st season, or B) sell the IP and relevant assets to a company more willing to properly invest in its future.
I don't know exactly who I'd prefer such a buyer to be, but considering all those companies licensing the brand or using similar imagery I mentioned before, I'm certain there would be a lot of interest in the idea.
