Hello,
This is my contribution to Citizen's Discussion at Tuesday's City Council meeting:
Good morning,
The people voted to approve the sale of recreational marijuana in our city because they were told that it would bring in $10,000,000 to $15,000,000 in tax revenue each year.
I am sorry but I don't believe that the projected numbers are right.
How much does the city of Denver bring in each year?
The population of Denver is about the same as El Paso County.
Do the backers of 300 claim that our city will now take $3,000,000 to $5,000,000 in tax revenue away from the city of Denver each year?
OK, how much will the city of Denver bring in each year after losing business from residents of Colorado Springs?
Why would our city then earn more than the city of Denver?
Do people in Colorado Springs smoke more marijuana than people in Denver?
I don't understand how the backers of the measure came up with the projected tax revenue and if the numbers are way off, the measure is invalid.
If the people approved the measure because they were deceived about the tax revenue, the measure is invalid.
Who has the legal obligation to check the numbers and defend the rights of the people who believed that the projected numbers were accurate?
Does anyone else now question the sincerity of the backers of the measure?
If the math used to arrive at the projected tax revenue is not reasonable or believable, we have to question their sincerity.
Will the city please give me an assurance that the projected tax revenue numbers are in fact legitimate?
Our Mayor does not seem to believe that they are.
I am convinced that the numbers are wrong.
Thank you, Carl Strow
