For the Sake of Our Children: A Global Call for Peace in the Russia–Ukraine War
The Issue
To the Governments of Russia and Ukraine, and the International Community
We, Lightup Foundation, in collaboration with the State of the African Diaspora (SOAD), call for renewed diplomatic efforts towards a just and lasting peace in the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
Behind every conflict are children whose childhoods are disrupted, parents who fear for their families, and communities facing loss, displacement and uncertainty. Regardless of nationality, every child deserves safety, every family deserves dignity, and every civilian life matters.
As an organisation committed to youth protection, we are particularly concerned about deceptive, coercive or exploitative recruitment into foreign military conflicts, including risks affecting African youth and other foreign nationals.
We respectfully urge the Governments of Russia and Ukraine to:
- Intensify meaningful dialogue and negotiations towards a just and lasting peace.
- Protect civilians, especially children and other vulnerable people, in accordance with international humanitarian law.
- Strengthen safeguards against deceptive, coercive and exploitative recruitment.
- Support humane treatment of prisoners of war, efforts to trace missing persons and communication with families.
- Promote humanitarian assistance and children’s access to education, healthcare and psychological support.
We invite the United Nations, governments, humanitarian organisations and people worldwide to support peaceful dialogue and practical efforts to reduce suffering.
Our appeal is neutral and humanitarian. We do not seek to take sides or compare suffering; we seek to protect human life and safeguard the future of the next generation.
For the sake of our children, their parents and future generations, let us choose dialogue over conflict and work together for peace.
