🌳 For Every Child, At Least One Tree — A 12-Year Environmental Stewardship Programme

Our Request
We request the Government of Tamil Nadu to introduce a “For Every Child, At Least One Tree” programme across all schools in Tamil Nadu.
Under this initiative:
Every school child should be given responsibility for at least one tree.
The child should plant or adopt the tree and care for it from the time they enter school until Class 12.
The Government should identify and allocate suitable public land for creating these student-managed green spaces.
Schools should help students monitor the health and growth of their trees.
Each tree can be digitally registered and monitored to track survival, not merely planting numbers.
Students completing Class 12 could receive recognition as “Tree Stewards.”
Why This Matters
Planting trees is important. But protecting and nurturing them for many years is even more important.
A child who cares for a tree for 12 years can develop a direct understanding of the connections between trees, soil, water, biodiversity, food systems and climate.
This programme can simultaneously support environmental restoration, ecological education and civic responsibility.
🌳 Projected Impact
If approximately 1 crore (10 million) school children participate, the principle of at least one tree per child could create:
1 crore children × 1 tree = 1 crore trees
This could mean:
At least 1 crore trees planted and nurtured
One student taking responsibility for each tree for up to 12 years
New green spaces around and beyond schools
Long-term benefits for soil and water conservation
Additional habitats supporting biodiversity
A generation developing a stronger sense of environmental responsibility
Most importantly, the goal should not simply be “How many trees were planted?”
It should be:
“How many trees survived and grew?”
Our Appeal
Let us not teach children about the environment only through textbooks.
Let every child grow up with a tree.
Let every tree have a steward.
Let every school become a centre of environmental responsibility.
We respectfully request the Government of Tamil Nadu to study this proposal, launch a pilot programme and work towards implementing it across the State.
