For Avon and Somerset Police to undertake a review of their investigation into Adam Bailey

The Issue

Adam Bailey ran a rescue and rehoming sanctuary in Somerset, England. On 23rd July 2020, a group of concerned people removed over 170 animals and birds that were living in appalling conditions, with the police in attendance.

A recent police investigation into Adam Bailey Rescue and Rehome Sanctuary found insufficient evidence to present to the Crown Prosecution Service. It is our view that the police failed to correctly investigate the actions and omissions of Adam Bailey, both in terms of the welfare of the animals and the acceptance of generous public donations, and also failed to take into account all the relevant legislation. We believe there is more than sufficient evidence to proceed, but that the police failed to collect or consider it.

The Police failed to interview and take statements from the majority of the people involved in the removal of the animals.

Failed to interview or take statements from any of the crew who cleaned up the land and subsequently discovered multiple dead birds, sheep, goats and dogs,
Failed to contact the land-owner, and obtain statements about the conditions at the site and the alleged harassment of themselves,
Failed to speak to any of the veterinary staff or others responsible for the aftercare of the animals,
Failed to speak to any of the witnesses who had previously been involved with the sanctuary,
Failed to contact the pest control company who inspected and cleared the site, even though they had provided a thorough report of the conditions in which the animals were kept.
Failed to investigate alleged criminal acts by Adam Bailey made known to them to by relevant statutory authorities (for example Illegally disposing of live stock, some diseased, and exceeding the legal limits of poultry without registration, and selling eggs from such livestock to the public).

The Police have also completely ignored the plight of the elderly landowners and the suffering they say they have experienced as a result of renting land to Adam Bailey.
The Police have totally ignored the the public’s concern and their views and experiences of Adam Bailey Rescue and Rehome Sanctuary

The Police have brushed aside hundreds of photographs taken over a period of time, hours of video footage and numerous forms of evidence that clearly depicts the extent of the abuse and neglect that occurred at the sanctuary.

The Police claim that Adam Bailey offered a "plausible" explanation for his actions and why the animals were in the condition they were. We completely dispute that there is any "plausibility" that can be found in poultry starving to death, mummified animals in cupboards and cat carriers, liquified dog remains and animal housing infested with pests to the extent that they required destruction.

Even if all of the other neglect and abuse could some how be miraculously explained these factors are clearly outwith the laws related to animal welfare.

We believe all this means they have failed to adequately investigate the alleged crimes and have therefore failed in their duty to protect and serve the community. We call for an official review of this inadequate investigation and that a new investigation is conducted, of sufficient quality to allow the evidence to be considered by the Crown Prosecution Service.
