Follow Through With TRC #26 - Limit Limitation Defenses for Indigenous Cases Nation-Wide!

The Issue

During several centuries, the government of Canada has abused the right of Indigenous people through practices that violate their charter rights. While violating charter rights is punishable by the Supreme Court, the government's misuse of the Statute of Limitation Defence has allowed them to get away with some of the most traumatic cases like Residential Schools or the land deception for Blood Tribe.

A lot of the things are not right for the Indigenous people, but the government is refusing to address them through misusing this statute. True reconciliation with the Indigenous people and the Canadian Society is not able to happen because of the government's way to avoid public shame.

This needs to change. The intergenerational trauma, the struggles faced by the Indigenous People, and other issues would continue to be faced by these groups if the government isn't held accountable for their misuse. It is important that there is an immediate legislation passed to ban the misuse of the Limitation Defence statute to end the generational sufferings caused by the government.

It is now the time to hold the government accountable, and there should not be any opportunity for the government to evade it!
