Flowers Foods: Keep your animal welfare promises!

The Issue

Do you have Dave’s Killer Bread, Tastykake, or Nature’s Own in your pantry? These are all brands owned by Flowers Foods- one of the top food and beverage companies in North America. While Flowers Foods claims it “values the humane treatment of animals,” it still clings to an animal welfare practice so appalling, many countries and states have made it illegal

Despite the company’s promise to go cage-free years ago, Flowers Floods is not only refusing to update the public on its progress, it has actually removed this cage-free egg commitment from its website.

Flower Foods made over $4.8 billion in sales last year, with its products covering about 85% of the US population. Flowers Foods' competitors like General Mills, Nestlé, and Conagra Brands are already 100% cage-free or are transparently reporting their progress towards that goal. So why is Flowers Foods continuing to support the archaic practice of caging egg-laying hens?

Flowers Foods profits from its empty promise while hundreds of thousands of chickens suffer and are confined in tiny, barren cages their entire lives. Each hen only having the space equal to about a sheet of paper. These sentient beings are unable to engage in natural behaviors, such as dust-bathing, perching, and nesting. Is this really the kind of company we want to support with our hard-earned money?

We urge Flowers Foods to republish its cage-free egg commitment and publicly report progress on how it will fulfill this promise to consumers. As a top food and beverage company in North America, Flowers Foods has the power and the responsibility to address the animal cruelty in its supply chain. Join us in fighting corporate greed and standing up for animal welfare.
