The Issue

Our potted step garden on the front steps of our home on Falkner Street in the Georgian Quarter has become more than just a collection of plants—it's a cherished part of our community. Known widely by locals, tourists, and visitors, our garden has served as a backdrop for countless photo shoots, from weddings to fashion displays. It frequently graces social media platforms highlighted as a beautiful  feature in the Georgian Quarter including on various 'Visit Liverpool' media pages and platforms promoting the city.

The garden significantly enhances the streetscene contributing positively to the area's character and beauty.  Fruit and veg has been grown here which has been shared among the local community. Furthermore, it offers vital environmental benefits by increasing biodiversity and providing natural solutions to mitigate flooding risks. Both of these are priority  targets on the current Liverpool City Council local plan.
It has also been used as an educational stop off teaching children and others about biodiversity and the benefits of wildflowers.

Unfortunately, after over 10 years of having the garden we have suddenly been asked by our landlords, Onward homes, to dismantle this beloved garden due to ‘Health and Safety’. There has been no dialogue - just an order out of the blue to remove the pots and baskets which were secure. Onward homes have focussed resource on ordering garden removal as opposed to supporting and listening to tenants. Their approach does not sit in line with their new policies as a forward looking community focussed landlord.

This decision has caused distress in our community, given the joy and ecological advantages it provides and support to people’s health and well-being. The removal of this potted oasis would be a significant loss to our neighbourhood, depriving residents and visitors of a joyful  green space that fosters connection and appreciation for nature.

We need to act quickly to rectify this situation and ensure that the cherished garden is reinstated. This petition aims to gather support from all those who believe in protecting and enhancing our local environment and Liverpool community spirit.

By signing this petition, you are not just advocating for a garden, but for preserving a meaningful symbol of community spirit and environmental stewardship. We would like to work together to convince Onward homes  to support the reinstatement our potted step garden for the benefit of all. Please support us in this mission by adding your signature today.
