This is a NEW petition that has been created to be brought fourth before the appropriate entities.  Another petition circulated in Shasta County but as far as is known, has not been brought before any Board, Council, Police or the Sheriff.  I assure you, this petition will be used appropriately.

The installation of Flock cameras, or similar type of cameras, in Shasta County has sparked significant controversy. As a resident affected by this decision, I feel compelled to voice my concerns about privacy and the potential misuse of surveillance technology in our community.

Flock cameras are marketed as tools for law enforcement to enhance community safety by capturing license plate data. However, they also raise serious questions about the invasion of personal privacy and civil liberties of law-abiding citizens. These cameras are capable of recording detailed information about our whereabouts and daily activities, often without our consent or oversight on how this data is used or protected.

Research indicates that widespread surveillance can have a chilling effect on freedom of expression and movement, creating an environment where people feel constantly monitored. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), these practices can disproportionately affect marginalized communities and contribute to biased policing methods.

While safety is a priority, it must not come at the expense of personal freedoms or lead to unlawful profiling of individuals. Several cities across the United States are re-evaluating or have already removed such surveillance systems due to privacy concerns and the questionable effectiveness of these programs in reducing crime. Shasta County should follow suit to ensure our privacy and civil liberties are protected.

We propose that Shasta County officials conduct a thorough review of the use and impact of Flock cameras. If they are found to infringe on privacy without substantial benefits to safety, we urge local authorities to consider alternative, less invasive methods of ensuring community safety, such as increasing community policing efforts and enhancing public awareness campaigns.
