Fix the roads in Indianapolis

Fix the roads in Indianapolis

The Issue

I live in Indianapolis, and our roads are embarrassing! Every day I drive through the city, I encounter roads filled with potholes and patches that barely last weeks. We've all experienced it—the sudden jolt as your car hits a nasty bump, the fear of damaging your vehicle, and the frustration of navigating roads that look more like obstacle courses. It's not just me; family and friends echo the same complaints. The issue isn't confined to one part of town—it's widespread, and it's consistent.

The current state of our roads poses a significant threat to the safety of drivers and pedestrians alike. Drivers unfamiliar with our roads continue to travel at the posted speed limits, unaware of the need to slow down for severe potholes. This can easily result in accidents, endangering lives. The city's band-aid fixes are not sufficient; they crumble away, leaving dangerous conditions for us all to navigate.

Where is the accountability from our local government? In 2021, Indianapolis had a budget of over $1.3 billion, yet our roads remain a mess. We need clear answers on where our tax dollars are going and a proactive, long-term plan to repair and maintain the city’s road infrastructure. According to the America's Infrastructure Report Card, aging roads cost Indiana drivers an average of $551 a year in added vehicle repair costs. This is unacceptable.

I am deeply concerned about my safety and the condition of my vehicle. The costs are piling up—alignments, new tires, repairs. We shouldn’t have to bear these expenses because of poorly maintained public infrastructure. My calls and emails to the Mayor's Action Line have gone unanswered for too long.

We need action. Mayor Joe Hogsett, it's time to prioritize road repairs. We need a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond temporary patching. This is about our safety, our vehicles, and our tax dollars. Let’s work together to develop a transparent and effective plan that addresses both immediate repairs and long-term road maintenance.

Please sign this petition to urge the authorities to take immediate and effective steps to fix the roads in Indianapolis. Together, our voice can drive the change we desperately need.
