Update: I have spoken with a representative from Mr Washington from Gwinnett Transportation and they have assured me that the concerns with this intersection have been identified and request to the State have been made for safety improvements. The state has to approve any changes because Buford Hwy is minted by the State, the  Gwinnett control Hamilton Mill and Buford S Hiill, so all three jurisdictions will have to work together to agree and make needed changes. Mr Washington will be asking for updates on July 1st 2025 at the monthly coordination meeting with the Sate DOT. 

We’re asking local and state officials to fix the dangerous and confusing intersection at Hill Street (also known as Bill Street) and Buford Highway (GA-13) in Buford, Georgia.

Here’s what’s happening:

🚗 No protected left turn: Drivers turning left from Hill Street often wait through multiple red lights just to turn, causing long backups and frustration — especially during peak traffic times.

⚠️ Unsafe behavior from Hamilton Mill Rd: Drivers coming from the opposite direction on Hamilton Mill Rd often use the left-turn-only lane to go straight through the light, surprising drivers on Hill Street who think it’s safe to turn left.

🚑 There have been several accidents at this intersection, and many near-misses. A formal open records request has been submitted to Gwinnett County to document the exact number of crashes from January 2023 to June 2025.

👷‍♂️ We’re asking the city and county to:

Add a dedicated left-turn signal from Hill Street to Buford Highway
Adjust signal timing to improve traffic flow
Enforce proper use of lanes on Hamilton Mill Road to stop illegal straight-through movements
