Fix safety and security issues in Wellington Square and Victoria Gardens

Fix safety and security issues in Wellington Square and Victoria Gardens
The issue
Stop the Violence, Abuse, Public Drinking, and Drug Use Happening in East Perth Parks!
East Perth's parks should be safe, welcoming spaces for families, children, and all members of our community to enjoy. Unfortunately, these public spaces have become hotspots for violence, abuse, anti-social behaviour, drunken parties, and drug use—putting everyone at risk and creating an unsafe environment.
Set up on behalf of John Morrison, and in collaboration with the East Perth Action Group, to improve our parks. Together we are commited to the ensuring the safety, security and future of our diverse community.
PETITION TO THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled:
We, the undersigned, bring to the attention of the House the ongoing issues of antisocial behaviour, homelessness, and vagrancy in public spaces, including Wellington Square, Victoria Gardens, and other areas in the City of Perth.
These locations, intended for community recreation and public use, have become unsafe due to persistent crime, substance abuse, and disorderly conduct, impacting public safety, local businesses, and the amenity of these spaces.
We therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to:
- Implement increased security measures, including partial fencing and gated access to these parks, similar to Queens Gardens, to enhance public safety and deter antisocial behaviour.
- Establish a temporary policing post, similar to Yagan Square, and increase police and ranger patrols to provide a visible presence, deter unlawful behaviour, and ensure compliance with local laws.
- Strengthen outreach and support services for those experiencing homelessness to provide pathways to housing and rehabilitation while reducing vagrancy in public spaces.
- Enforce stricter regulations on public drinking, drug use, and antisocial behaviour in affected areas.
- Establish an independent investigative authority to examine the root causes of these recurring issues and develop long-term solutions. This authority must have overarching accountability, sufficient powers to make recommendations, and the ability to ensure government agencies implement effective measures.
