Fix Our Parking: End Unfair Parking in Columbia!

Fix Our Parking: End Unfair Parking in Columbia!
The Issue
Who is impacted?
The current system is causing unnecessary stress, financial strain, and inconvenience for many in our community, including:
- Local business owners: Customers are discouraged from visiting shops and restaurants if parking is difficult or unsafe, directly hurting sales and foot traffic.
- Columbia residents: People picking up takeout, groceries, or visiting downtown are often blocked in or forced to park dangerously far from their destinations.
- Students: University of South Carolina and other local college students often struggle to find affordable, accessible parking just to attend class. Limited parking options and aggressive ticketing make it harder for students to succeed academically while managing already high tuition and living costs.
- Disabled drivers and caregivers: Handicap spaces are sometimes misused out of desperation, making access harder for those who genuinely need them.
- App-based delivery drivers (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub): Regularly fined while trying to complete deliveries in high-traffic areas with little safe or legal parking zones.
What is at stake?
If we don’t act, these parking problems will only grow—hurting local businesses, reducing access to services, and driving out the very workers and customers who support Columbia’s economy. It sends a message that Columbia is unfriendly to small businesses, working people, and modern services. But with change, we can create a more efficient, fair, and inclusive system that benefits everyone: residents, visitors, workers, and businesses alike.
Why is now the time to act?
With downtown Columbia growing and demand for delivery services higher than ever, it’s time to rethink how our city manages access and parking. We're not asking for special treatment—we’re asking for thoughtful solutions. Designated short-term zones, clearer signage, and equal enforcement could transform the experience for workers and the public alike.
Let's make parking in Columbia that works for all of us.
