Fix NYC Policies Keeping Homeless Kids Out of School

Fix NYC Policies Keeping Homeless Kids Out of School
The Issue
In New York City, more than 150,000 students are homeless — and nearly two-thirds are missing large portions of the school year.
A new report found that 63% of homeless students are chronically absent. Many are forced to travel long distances across boroughs or switch schools multiple times a year because of how shelters are assigned.
These policies are making it harder for children to get to class, stay in school, and keep up with learning. Only 33% of homeless students are reading at grade level — nearly half the rate of their housed peers.
This isn’t just about housing. It’s about access to education.
We are calling on the NYC Department of Homeless Services and City Hall to fix shelter placement policies, keep families closer to their children’s schools, and ensure students can attend class consistently.
No child should miss school because of where they’re placed.
