Fix Nottingham’s Roads – Stop the Pothole Crisis Now!

The Issue

Sign this petition to demand urgent action from Nottingham City Council to repair our dangerously neglected roads.

Our roads are in a shocking and unacceptable state. Across Nottingham, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are suffering due to the sheer number of potholes and crumbling road surfaces. The Council has a legal duty to maintain our roads to a safe standard, yet time and time again, we see patchy, temporary fixes that fail within weeks, leaving us with roads that damage our vehicles and endanger lives.

Why This Matters

  • Potholes are causing hundreds of pounds in damage to cars – cracked alloys, ruined tyres, misaligned wheels, and broken suspensions.
  • Cyclists and motorcyclists are at serious risk of injury or worse, swerving to avoid dangerous potholes.
  • Pedestrians face trip hazards from uneven road surfaces.
  • The Council has a legal responsibility under the Highways Act 1980 to keep roads in safe condition – yet they are failing us.

Unfair and Unsafe.
Every year, we are legally required to MOT our vehicles to prove they are roadworthy. But who is checking if the roads are car-worthy? It is completely unfair that motorists must maintain their vehicles to a high safety standard when the roads themselves are left to deteriorate into dangerous, vehicle-damaging hazards.

What We Demand
We call on Nottingham City Council to take immediate and serious action to:
Conduct a full city-wide assessment of road conditions and publicly disclose a repair plan.
Urgently fix major potholes and resurface neglected roads instead of just patching over them.
Create a proper road maintenance strategy that prevents potholes from forming in the first place.
Introduce a "Roadworthiness Standard" – just like an MOT – to ensure roads are regularly tested and kept safe for users.
Compensate drivers for vehicle damage caused by potholes, through a clear and fair claims process.

Act Now – Demand Safe Roads!

If Nottingham City Council does not act, we will escalate our complaints to the Local Government Ombudsman and seek further action under the Highways Act 1980. We refuse to keep paying for repairs to our vehicles while the Council ignores its legal duty.

We deserve safe, well-maintained roads that do not destroy our vehicles or put lives at risk. Sign this petition now and send a message to Nottingham City Council: FIX OUR ROADS!
