Fix Morrison Drive NOW!

Fix Morrison Drive NOW!
The Issue
In the early morning of April 28, 20-year-olds Lizzy Zito and Arianna Gamber were killed in a preventable and senseless hit-and-run incident on Morrison Dr. in Charleston, SC. We have since learned on May 6 that these women were hit twice by two separate hit-and-run drivers within 30 minutes of each other. On May 15, reporting that includes reference to this petition notes that SCDOT is the major roadblock.
The lack of crosswalks and sidewalks along this 4-lane busy corridor has lead to tragedy. God forbid something happens to a child at Sanders-Clyde Elementary School, where buses stop on both sides of Morrison Dr.
While we welcome recent news of increased drunk driving enforcement, more must be done. This petition calls on the Mayor of Charleston to work with Justin P. Powell, the SCDOT Director of Transportation, the Charleston City Council, Developer Mike Schwarz, Katie Zimmerman of Charleston Moves, and relevant elected representatives, agencies, and executive partners to quickly enact common-sense plans to make this important and growing area of Charleston safer for pedestrians.
This problem is much bigger than just on Morrison Dr. This petition also calls for City leaders to work with area neighborhood associations to identify and mitigate locations at high risk for pedestrian injury and death.
Charleston is already the 5th most dangerous city in the country for pedestrians. The time for excuses is over. The time to act is NOW. We can do better and must act now to improve pedestrian safety before more lives are tragically lost.
We invite all Charleston area neighborhood associations and civic organizations to support and share this petition.
