The Issue

I am a resident of Grahamsville, New York, living on workers’ compensation and Social Security Disability. Between both, I receive about $2,753 per month total. My Social Security Disability alone is only about $1,135 per month after deductions. Despite living modestly, I cannot keep up with basic expenses like mortgage, food, utilities, and insurance. I am falling behind every month. The biggest issue is this: If I try to work to earn extra income, I risk losing my benefits entirely. This creates a system where people who want to work and contribute are punished for trying. Cost-of-living increases for disability are minimal and do not reflect real-world expenses. Meanwhile, housing, food, and utilities continue to rise significantly. I am also a parent and grandparent, and it is incredibly difficult not being able to help my family the way I want to. I am not asking for a handout. I am asking for fairness. We need: • Cost-of-living adjustments that reflect real expenses • The ability to earn supplemental income without losing benefits • A system that supports independence—not fear There are millions of Americans facing this same situation. It’s time for change. — C. Hatton, Grahamsville, NY
