Fix Bengaluru Traffic: Strict Lane Discipline & Corporate Accountability Now
The Issue
The Problem: A City at a Standstill
Bengaluru is globally recognized as one of the most congested cities in the world. However, the issue isn't just the number of vehicles—it is a total breakdown of civic sense and traffic discipline. From footpaths being used as "express lanes" to the blatant disregard for signals, the current state of our roads is a hazard to life and a drain on the economy.
The Core Violations
- The "Yellow Plate" Menace: Cabs, private buses, and BMTC drivers often operate with a "might is right" mentality, speeding to beat timers, cutting across lanes, and stopping in the middle of the road.
- Two-Wheeler & Auto Recklessness: Driving on the wrong side of the road, overtaking from the left (roadside), and zigzagging through traffic without indicators.
- The Gig-Economy Rush: Delivery partners (Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, etc.) and Yulu riders frequently violate signals and ride on footpaths to meet strict delivery timelines.
- Illegal Parking: Unorganized parking on arterial roads reduces 3-lane roads to a single lane, causing massive bottlenecks.
Our Demands to the Ministry of Transport and Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP):
- Corporate & Platform Accountability: We demand a system where traffic violations are linked to employment.
- Mandatory Reporting: When a violator is caught, the BTP should automatically notify their employer (Corporate office or Gig-platform like Ola/Uber/Swiggy/Zepto and more).
- Internal Sanctions: Companies must be mandated to impose internal fines or a one-week service suspension for repeat offenders.
- Quarterly Training: Make it mandatory for all IT parks and corporate offices to conduct quarterly "Road Ethics & Safety" workshops for employees.
2. Professional Driver Reform
- Mandatory Certification: Every commercial license holder (Bus, Cab, Auto) must undergo bi-annual training on lane discipline and passenger safety.
- Strict Fleet Monitoring: Schools and private bus operators must be held legally liable for the reckless driving of their staff.
3. Gamified Public Enforcement (The "Public Eye" Evolution)
The existing Public Eye app needs to be modernized and incentivized.
- Citizen Rewards: Implement a "Bounty System" where citizens receive points or a small percentage of the fine (cashback) for reporting a violation that successfully results in a challan.
- AI-Driven Verification: Use AI to quickly verify photos/videos uploaded by the public to speed up the ticketing process.
4. Strict Infrastructure & Enforcement
- Lane Segregation: Physical barriers for bus lanes and strict "No-Overtaking" zones in high-traffic corridors.
- Automated Wrong-Way Detection: Install sensors that trigger alarms and cameras specifically for wrong-side driving.
The Statistics
- Economic Loss: Studies suggest Bengaluru loses over ₹20,000 crores annually due to traffic congestion, fuel wastage, and lost man-hours.
- Pedestrian Safety: Footpath riding is not just an inconvenience; it is a direct threat to the elderly and children. Bengaluru sees hundreds of pedestrian fatalities every year due to such violations.
- Mental Health: The average Bangalorean spends nearly 10 days a year stuck in traffic, leading to increased stress, respiratory issues, and road rage.
Closing Statement
We, the citizens of Karnataka, are tired of the chaos. We demand that the Ministry of Transport and the Traffic Police move beyond manual checking and implement these systemic, tech-driven changes. We want roads where rules are respected, and violators face real consequences.
