Fix Accessibility Negligence at University of Louisville

The Issue

The University of Louisville campus is plagued with outdated elevator maintenance, neglected wheelchair ramps during snow, and insufficient handicapped parking spot enforcement. I've experienced firsthand the difficulties and frustrations of unreliable accessibility infrastructure. It's not just an inconvenience—it's a matter of ensuring all students, faculty, and visitors can access our facilities with dignity and ease.

Unreliable elevators are not just a minor annoyance; they are barriers that prevent full participation in academic and social activities on campus. Some elevators have been not been inspected for months, passing their date of next inspection. Missing or broken safety features, outdated inspection certificates, and frequent outages make it difficult for individuals with mobility challenges to get where they need to be, when they need to be there. These concerns derive a sense of lack of safety for students who use elevators, and rely on them to navigate.

Beyond elevators, the lack of properly maintained wheelchair ramps poses a daily struggle, particularly when they are obstructed by snow or other debris. It is imperative that these pathways are kept clear and usable at all times to ensure seamless movement across campus for everyone, especially in inclement weather. Wheelchair ramps should be of the campus' upmost priory during snowstorms to keep clear. These paths were still icy in some areas, as well as unsafe to use despite campus being reopened.

Additionally, the issue of blocked handicapped parking spots continues to be ignored. Despite repeated requests for stricter enforcement, careless drivers still occupy these spots, undermining their critical function. These spots will be taken by delivery drivers and maintenance crews to the facility of UofL! Individuals who rely on these spaces for their mobility are left to face additional hurdles that can easily be remedied with stricter policies and vigilant oversight.

We are calling on the University of Louisville administration to take immediate action. We demand that the university not only addresses the current state of elevator maintenance but also commits to a published, comprehensive Campus Accessibility Repair Plan. This plan should include regular inspections, prompt repairs, and a transparent timeline for all accessibility-related improvements. What are we wanting in return from the university? A Campus Accessibility Repair Plan Inspection Updates to the Elevators in the Main Buildings of the University Inspection Updates to the Elevators in the Student Housing Buildings on Campus at the University  Implementing tickets, fines, fees, towing to vehicles in spaces that are for handicap accessible parking - Especially to vehicles that are parking in white lined spaces, and vehicles without any handicap markers displayed in their wind sheild. These should be for immediate action!  During Severe Weather Clearing off Ramps and Accessible Pathways FIRST and having ALL of them accessible after winter storms During Severe Weather Clearing Off Handicap Accessible Parking Spots FIRST as to give AMPLE space to those who need to access these spaces Do not block off accessible ramps during construction periods

In this spirit of inclusivity and fairness, we urge the university to ensure that every member of its community can move freely and confidently in their educational environment. A proactive approach to accessibility is not just a legal responsibility, but a moral one. Your support in signing this petition can drive meaningful change and lead to a more accessible University of Louisville campus for everyone.
