Why this petition matters

Started by Allison Sardinas

On November 16th, we are calling on all students to join the movement to declare their campuses a #SanctuaryCampus and commit to putting our bodies between Trump and undocumented students.

This petition is an extension of that call. We formally request that FIU President, Mark Rosenberg, make provisions, announcements, and other necessary steps to ensure FIU's minority population feels secure in this new, uncertain environment. By pledging that FIU is a sanctuary campus, President Rosenberg will help give vulnerable students justice, equality, and stability so that we can continue to be excellent students and community members. The following is a list of demands from the national #SanctuaryCampus movement that we would also like to see implimented at FIU:

"As members of Cosecha Movement and/or students at this college or university, we urge you to affirmatively stand with immigrants who study, live, and work at the college or university by adopting a public, written policy communicating the the following protections:

The college/ university refuses all voluntary information sharing with ICE/ CBP across all aspects of the college/university to the fullest extent possible under the law;

The college/ university refuses ICE physical access to all land owned or controlled by the college/ university;

The college/ university prohibits  campus security from inquiring about or recording as to an individual’s immigration status or enforcing immigration laws or participating with ICE/ CBP in actions.

The college/ university does not use e-verify.

The college/ university prohibits housing discrimination based on immigration status.

This policy shall be enforced by all college or university staff and all contractors and subcontractors and their employees working on property owned or controlled by the college or university.

The college or university commits to ongoing dialogue with the students about additions to the college or university policy and support for community efforts that protect immigrants who study, live, and work at the college/ university and their families and the community."

We are already seeing students rise up on their own-- but we must stand together in national solidarity to create a massive resistance against Donald Trump and to demand permanent protection, dignity, and respect for all immigrants.

It's time that we unite to protect our most vulnerable people-- including undocumented immigrants, Black people, Muslims, Queer people, and all people of color.

We must amplify each other and rise up together in the face of Trump.
