Many petitions focus on ending the seal hunt in Canada, and this activism is steadily growing. However, things that benefit the Canadian economy like the seal hunt are unlikely to be ceased in their entirety, namely due to the huge investments that the government and individuals have put into the sector. This means that, unfortunately, it is highly impractical to lobby for an end to the seal hunt, and taking a smaller leap to a humane hunt is the most efficient call to action.

Let me be perfectly clear, seals are in no way endangered. The purpose of this petition is solely to ensure a humane seal harvest and stop the abuse.

Humane regulations already exist within the Marine Mammal Regulations (MMR), though a rough summary can be found on the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) website's Ensuring the seal harvest is humane page. Despite this, seal hunters still ignore regulations and disobey rules, killing seals in ways that are hard to watch. Humane Society International posted a video to YouTube that can help to visualize what is happening during the seal harvest.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) needs to recognize this problem and take action to enforce a humane seal harvest. The longer we ignore this, the worse it will get. Even though seals are not endangered now, it is no longer improbable to say that they will be in the foreseeable future.
