The Issue
Nov 10th 2025 my son, a young man with disabilities, was assaulted by Officers Ragni and Tuma of the Poughkeepsie Police Department on a UCAT bus at Poughkeepsie train station. This incident has not only caused immense physical pain and psychological trauma to my son but has also shattered our trust in the very system that is supposed to protect us.
My son, who is Black and disabled, was subjected to brutal force without any just cause. Witnesses at the scene confirmed his non-threatening demeanor, and yet, he was treated with undue violence. As a mother, my heart breaks for the injustice my son has faced.
Statistics show that people of color, especially those with disabilities, are disproportionately targeted by police violence. According to the National Disability Rights Network, disabled individuals are up to three times more likely to face use of force from law enforcement. Furthermore, the Washington Post reported that although only 13% of the U.S. population is Black, Black people are killed by police at more than twice the rate of white people.
This is not an isolated incident nor a singular oversight. It reflects a broader pattern of systemic issues within our policing institutions. Officers Ragni and Tuma's actions not only violated my son's rights but also represent a significant threat to community trust and safety. Firing these officers would be a critical step toward accountability and justice, signaling zero tolerance for brutality and discrimination.
Our goal is not only to seek justice for my son but to prevent such atrocities from recurring within our community.
