Every day, students at Rochester Prep High School on 14 Mark Street are subjected to an environment that feels more like a prison than a place for learning. My child, along with all other students, walks through metal detectors as if they are criminals, when in reality they are simply trying to receive an education. This humiliating procedure paints them as potential offenders instead of the bright young minds they are.

Why should our children, who are eager to learn and grow, be treated like alienated beings? They should not be constantly pat-down and scrutinized for illegal drugs or weapons that most do not possess. The presence of metal detectors and invasive searches creates an atmosphere of mistrust and anxiety, hindering their educational experience and personal development.

Ms. Dicks, the principal of Rochester Prep, has failed to address parents' concerns about this oppressive environment. Instead of fostering a nurturing and safe atmosphere conducive to learning, she insists on policies that alienate and shame our students.

Statistics from the Department of Education highlight that schools without metal detectors report higher student satisfaction and better academic performance. Our children deserve to attend a school where they feel respected and valued, not one where they are treated as suspects.

Effective school safety can be achieved through alternative measures such as increased teacher-student engagement, supportive student services, and community involvement, rather than treating students as potential threats.

We demand that the administration re-evaluate their approach to school safety and create an environment where our students feel supported and secure. Ms. Dicks' current direction is damaging the trust of parents and the community and is not reflecting the core values of education and care.
