The Issue

This past Halloween, KIPP Texas San Antonio Regional Superintendent Guadalupe Diaz thought it was appropriate to dress up as Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, whose agency, ICE, is under. On the official KIPP Texas Website, Guadalupe boasts that she "started her journey as a bilingual teacher educating students on the West side of San Antonio." Based on this, it is safe to assume she has used her Hispanic background to her advantage in her career, yet she dressed up as someone who actively targets Latinos, racially profiles individuals with brown skin and indigenous features, and encourages violence against immigrants. Considering she works for KIPP Texas San Antonio, a district with a majority Hispanic population, her insensitivity over a political issue that has torn families apart and even has proven deadly should be cause for removal from her position. As students of KIPP Texas, we want to foster a safe environment for our diverse population; firing Guadalupe Diaz from her position would do just that. It would teach her - and individuals with mindsets alike - that there are severe repercussions to their actions. Help us bring justice to our schools!
