Fine social media companies who allow AI channels to continue publishing dangerous content
The Issue
I've personally been fooled a number of times by AI-generated content online, believing it to be genuine only to later discover it contains numerous errors and dangerous falsehoods. My friends' children are particularly affected by their consumption of addictive social media content and many have become depressed, or worse, suicidal as a result.
The impact of AI-generated misinformation is far-reaching and deeply troubling. False information of any kind spreads rapidly on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, where algorithms promote sensationalism over truth, negative emotional reaction over rational thought. AI generated misinformation is particularly nasty, being generated millions or billions of times faster in the ruthless pursuit of profit over public safety.
Social media companies have the responsibility and the tools to detect and eliminate these accounts and this content before it spreads, yet their negligence and complete lack of accountability persist.
Therefore, I am calling on government regulators and policymakers to impose strict fines on social media corporations that permit AI-generated misinformation to flourish unchecked. Only by holding these companies financially accountable, they will be incentivized to improve their technology and policy measures to ensure safe, factual, and reliable information is available on their platforms. The courts are already beginning to take action with verdicts in favor of lawsuits but that is a very long, slow, and expensive process taking many years.
We need governments to act now to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly children and teenagers, who consume this content daily without a satisfactory means to assess whether it is true or false.
We need to stand together in demanding responsible action from social media giants to safeguard our loved ones’ mental well-being. Please sign this petition to urge legislation to limit AI accounts from using social media platforms and real penalties for companies that fail to comply.
