The Issue

This is a matter deeply personal to many of us who see animals as companions, not disposable items. In an horrific incident in New York City, a helpless Shih Tzu was found after being thrown down the trash chute of a 17 story building. Due to the severity of its injuries, the dog had to be euthanized by the ASPCA. Such cruelty inflicted upon this innocent life is a crime and it shakes many New Yorkers to their core.

"A source close to the discovery told Nexstar’s WPIX that the animal, which had matted fur, had all four legs broken and looked to be in agonizing pain."
Both the NYPD and NYCHA have been unable to locate the person responsible for this heinous crime. This is despite the fact that the search is narrowed down to a single apartment building. It signifies a lack of seriousness in prioritizing this case, and many feel that this itself is an inexcusable negligence. In New York, animal cruelty is a felony under section 353 of the agriculture and markets law, hence, it is the duty of NYPD to spend the necessary resources to investigate and bring the criminal to justice.
Numerous studies affirm the correlation between animal cruelty and violence towards humans, demonstrating that public safety is at stake.¹ ² ³
The FBI recognizes animal cruelty as a class A felony, substantiating the gravity of this heinous offense. By catching and prosecuting the offender, we not only stand up for the innocent life that was lost in such a brutal manner, but we also work towards discouraging future offences of this kind.
We implore the NYPD and NYCHA to intensify their efforts to investigate this case and catch the offender. Animals, like humans, have the right to live without fear and deserve justice when they are harmed. We request the individuals responsible for these investigations to remember, a dog is not a piece of garbage. Let's not let this Shih Tzu’s suffering be in vain. Stand with us, sign this petition, and demand justice for our voiceless companions.
