Financial Literacy Class

Financial Literacy Class
The Issue
How old were you when you learned how to manage your own finances? Specifically, things like filing taxes, building credit, dealing with savings/budgeting, investments, and insurance. Most people only learn until they are forced to. Everybody responds with the same answer when asked about it, “my parents taught me.”
What about the people that dont have that guidance?
Personally, as an eighteen year old senior in high school, I find myself worrying about these responsibilities I will soon have to face, the necessities a person must learn when becoming an adult.
Why are we just expected to know how to do these things?
As a soon to be graduate about to start a new chapter of my life, I have absolutely no idea how to do these crucial things that my parents have to deal with in their everyday lives. I constantly find myself asking them questions about savings, how I file my taxes when working, and how insurance works.
In high school, we learn about Math, History, Science, Language, English, etc, but we learn nothing about how to apply these concepts to real life.
This gap in education leaves students unprepared for adulthood, and turning to others for answers.
This needs to change.
Join me in making a change. With your help we can implement a semester-long financial literacy class in public high schools, in the state of Florida, that would be required to graduate. Students would learn how to advocate for themselves and learn what it is actually like to become an adult. This would ultimately better prepare us for life after high school.
