Description of the Problem

 

Ever since 2021 I have lived in Hyde Park-partially on Millstone Road- and for the most part it’s been lovely. I did notice one problem ever since the moment I moved there, one big dent of a problem.  The problem is a large pothole in the Millstone road. We are promised safety in our neighborhoods and drivable roads. This is violated by a huge pothole near my house that makes it near impossible to drive over.

 

Why it's a problem 

In my neighborhood, we hold a value of safety.

The problem that is happening in my community is violating this value by portraying an active threat to the bikers, beginner drivers and possibly disabled people of Millstone road. The huge hole that is often iced over or filled with water. Is impossible to bike over without falling in or slipping on the ice, and it is dangerous to drive over especially when you're new to driving. Also if you need a wheelchair for transportation, it is very difficult to wheel over a frozen puddle or try to avoid a huge gaping hole in the ground.

Our community says it values safety but what is happening goes against that value because it is unsafe to travel over a lake-sized poodle. 

 

 

This personally affects me and others in my community because I love to bike. Ever since I moved to Milstone I have grown a connection with the big willow trees and small parks near my house. The unfortunate truth is that I can only bike one way because of the hole blocking a way of entry. Also there are a alot of pets in my neighborhood that need nice long walks for their health and safety. You cannot talk very long walks down the road when the road is extremely limited in terms of space.

The community agrees that this pothole has been here for too long and now needs to be filled. 

What should be done about it

The reason I am contacting the Boston Works Department is because they are responsible for fixing and making the roads in our city. I believe that the fix for this problem is not too difficult, they just need to fill in this hole. 

We respectfully demand you address the cracks and giant holes in our road because we would like to do these small and necessary things like transportation. It will be the best thing to do for our community. 

Foundational ideas this petition is built on

 Lastly, I would like to state the foundational idea that “people have the right to monitor their community to make sure it is doing its job, and to use their voice to speak out if it isn’t”. This is an idea seemented in our democracy from the beginning, it basically just says that we can voice our truth to the people in power. 

As of right now, we need these roads fixed therefore
