Fight Unfair Censoring Practices on YouTube

The Issue

As an active user of YouTube, I have been both a witness and a victim of its unfair censorship practices. Countless instances have revealed a startling bias in YouTube's regulatory system. Conversations on videos involving black individuals, for instance, often contain racially insensitive or outright racist comments, which, even when reported, remain on the platform. In contrast, my own responses to such comments or even positive video contributions encouraging my community of black individuals are frequently flagged, causing me to be banned, or mysteriously disappear upon posting.

These experiences with YouTube's unbalanced censoring norms contradict the democratic ideals we value in the United States. Such practices not only suppress productive dialogue but push forward harmful propaganda against select groups while safeguarding others.

This censorship bias isn't limited to isolated incidents. According to a 2019 study by Tubular Labs, videos advocating hate speech were viewed 280 million times on YouTube, a stark contrast against their own guidelines. It is evident that despite intending to create a safe and inclusive space for all, YouTube's censorship efforts have been inconsistently applied and, at worst, discriminatory.

Thus, I urge you to sign this petition to bring awareness to the United States government, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and those who may be negatively affected by YouTube's inconsistent censoring practices. It is our plea that the FTC launches a thorough investigation into YouTube and its leaning censorship norms. In a democracy where freedom of speech is a constitutional right, we must ensure that this freedom is upheld by all organizations, even digital platforms like YouTube. Sign this petition today to make your voice heard against unfair censorship!
