Fight to stop reclassification in club lacrosse and use age-based divisions

The Issue

Reclassifying is when players hold themselves back a year for athletic gain and is a loophole for cheating since club lacrosse is based on grade not age which we are fighting to change. Reclassifying is unethical and ruins the sport in several ways such as.

Only private school players can, so only rich predominantly white private school players will succeed. Even though native Americans created the game thousands of years ago they won't be able to succeed and already there are very few professional Native American lacrosse players since Native Americans are one of if not the poorest ethnic groups in the country and can't afford private schools like most Americans.

It results in a loss of popularity of lacrosse, a sport where the average professional player's salary is $35,000 in the PLL. No wonder it's not a major sports league and they make that much since 90% of children go to public schools and will play other sports where they can succeed without reclassifying at an expensive private school.

Public school lacrosse will suffer and only private schools will have talent.

It's unethical since they take school, club, and college spots away from the normal-aged players who would have been good enough to make the team in their own age group, unlike the reclassified players who weren't skilled enough.

The PLL, the professional field lacrosse league uses age based team instead of grade for their youth programs

Lacrosse is one of the most violent sports so having players a year older would increase the rate of injury and death. We just had to get new chest pads because players were dying from commotio cordis (cardiac arrest from a blow to the heart).

So many amazing players out there won’t be able to show their talents and the future best players in the world will never reach their potential because of reclassifying.

Private schools already have a better opportunity to play at a higher level since they have better facilities, coaches, teammates, opponents, and more practices. Now they can play down a year too.

USA Lacrosse already started age verification for youth athletes but not for high schoolers where it's the most important because of recruiting. They said in a statement “Age is the best indicator for determining how to group children due to physical and cognitive development. It is also the most easily verified method to segment players. The USA Lacrosse age verification system assists leagues and event operators in ensuring that players are segmented properly”

The #1 ranked player in the class of 2026 is reclassified and is a 17-year-old sophomore
It's so popular and such a problem there are numerous videos and comments on social media naming and complaining about players who are reclassified.

Clubs and schools get another year of tuition

19-year-old adults will be roaming the halls with 14-year-old kids.

Nearly all other sports use age-based teams instead of grade.

Will affect the academic rankings of students who don't even play lacrosse since the reclassified students have an extra year in HS to prepare for the SAT and have better grades since they already completed that grade.

The #1 ranked HS team in the country for lacrosse has a boarding tuition of $61,000, almost $20,000 more than a 2024 Mercedes Benz SUV.

Multiple Division 1 lacrosse coaches agree with us and think it's unacceptable to reclass for athletic gain.

How are there rules about logo sizes on uniforms but not reclassifying?

The NLL, who play box lacrosse and is more popular than field lacrosse in Canada, go off age not grade and have more diverse players and bigger crowds that sell out NBA/NHL arenas because players don’t need to cheat and reclassify at an expensive private school to succeed.
