The Issue

I am currently completing my teacher training at a primary school, and the lack of financial support has been a significant challenge. There’s no bursary, no funding unless I resort to taking out a loan that I will eventually have to repay. It feels like I am dedicating all my time and effort to training without the financial backing needed to sustain myself.

This situation is not unique to me. Across the UK, countless student teachers are struggling financially while working hard to prepare for a career in education. The profession demands dedication and passion, yet it seems unfair to expect us to work for free until we are fully qualified. This reality forces many potential educators, especially those from low-income backgrounds, to reconsider their career choice due to financial pressures.

The lack of financial support not only affects us personally but also impacts the quality of future educational standards. If potential teachers are deterred by financial strain during their training, how can we expect to inspire a new generation of educators? We need to ensure a solution that will help build a robust teaching workforce.

Providing a living wage or reasonable stipend for student teachers would alleviate some of these pressures. It could encourage more talented individuals to enter the teaching profession, knowing they can sustain themselves while training. Additionally, financial support could prevent student debt accumulation, lifting a massive burden as we start our careers.

Countries like Finland, known for their exemplary educational systems, support their student teachers financially, and it's time the UK follows suit. By implementing financial support for student teachers, the government can affirm its commitment to nurturing future educators and maintaining high educational standards.

Please join me in urging the UK government and educational institutions to implement policies that provide financial support for student teachers during their training. Sign this petition to help us build a future where sustainability for teachers starts from day one of their training.
